Good afternoon,
It is January 22nd and 33.6 degrees on Long Lake in January??? We are
under a Winter Storm Watch for this weekend and praying we get dumped on!
Snowmobiling has been pretty good this winter and we are lucky to have the trails
open and groomed but more snow would be great. We only have about 6 more weeks left and we would love to have snow right up to the end!
We are sad to say we are not having our annual Long Lake Fishing Contest.
We just can not get the help together like we could 20 years ago. Of course 20 years ago there were 20 more resorts still in business all helping in the Chamber. Maybe we will be able to get it together for next year.

Ok, obvious I am not good at this but I will get better! I finally updated the Update page! So everything is back in line. I just want to remind everyone that we are holding our Ice Fishing Contest again this year!
WE are so excited......It is Saturday Feb 14th noon at the Pioneer Resort and Bar.
WEll, we have had a nice snowfall this year. The trail were all open in all the counties and nicely groomed! Although, from a business perspective you can sure see the economy is taking its toll because the sledders are just not out there like they were 10 years ago! Our bar was packed Friday, Saturday's, and Sunday's back in the 90's. Hopefully this ecomomy will turn around soon
and help us all out again. But we are thankful what we did have this year.
Hopefully the temps will hold out for another couple weeks.

Hello to all Long Lake readers,This is my first time to post a blog and I have to admit I hope I can do this. I googled alot of other "bloggers" to see how I should write this, what kind of format to use, and all the formalites on blogging. After reading everything I am going to forget it all and just jump right into it. Some blogs are anonymous, but I feel that you should probably know who I am. My name is Beth Teasdale. My husbandand I own Lincolnwood Resort (23 years) and I make changes on this website for the chamber. I can't really call myself the webmaster because this is a self editing website so I don't need to know all the html formats or computer writing technicalities. It is really easy and alot of fun to maintain this site. We can do whatever we want and when I do need special help Bangsberg Software is right there to help me. Well, this is what I have heard about the fishing on Long Lake. Crappy fishing is crazy! They are right in the weeds around 8 ft of water. They are pulling them in by the hords. Crappie minnows seem to be the best source. Bass have also been a faithfulbiter too. They are using alot of leeches and nightcrawlers. As, far as Walleyes they are biting on about 20 feet of water on nice cool rock bars. In another few weeks or so, leeches will be hard to find so buy em while you can!
The weather this summer started out very windy dry. But July turned around and we recieved lots of nice hot semi calm days. We have not had many rainy days but do get some good storms once in awhile during the night. All, in all people have been very pleased with this years climate. Although it seems dry, the corn looks good this year. I remember last year is was so yellow and weepy.
Dont forgot to buy your 2008 raffle ticket for the Long Lake Lottery!!!!!!!They are sold at all the businesses on the lake. More info on that isour page: Calandar of Events. Well, I am going to end it here for awhile. The resort is crazy this time of year and I better get back to my bookwork and bartending. Remember we only have 3 more weeks to play the Long Lake Poker Run: It ends at Lincolnwood tonight,then Hobo's next Wednesday and then Rockford will finish it off.

Please do your part to keep our area beautiful, clean & safe. Have a great summer! Walleye Hatchery UpdateThe walleye hatchery on Long Lake was a large success again this year. The hatchery is sponsored by Walleyes for Tomorrow and worked mostly by Long Lake Chamber members. We installed the nets soon after the ice went out and started collecting fish on April 18th. We had some very nice large females in the nets this year and we had all of the jars full of eggs by the 20th. We had approximately 3.5 million eggs that hatched and released the fry on May 5th thru the 10th. Again this year the DNR marked most of the fry with an OTC dye. Hopefully some of them will show up this fall when they do their surveys. I would like to thank everyone that helped and we always need more help especially with the cleaning and maintenance of the hatchery. The Long Lake Preservation Association has established a partnership arrangement with the Long Lake Chamber to work on projects jointly that benefit the Long Lake Watershed. The major example is the Walleye hatchery project in which we raise fry from local stock for release into Long Lake. The portable hatchery is located at Daves outboard. More information can be found in this newsletter. Additionally, both groups are complimenting each others efforts in the promotion of the outdoor activities for local owners and tourists. The Activities LLPA promotes is offering programs to property owners and users of the Lake, on good stewardship practices to preserve the water quality of Long Lake. The clean air and water is what attracts people to this area. This is why the membership of LLPA is so involved and focused on maintaining the beauty of this area. The activities that LLPA will be offering this summer season are offered at the Hunt Hill Audubon Camp and are:Cakes at the Lake: A pancake breakfast is offered for a minimal fee followed by a free presentation on topics that can be enjoyed by all, especially our children and grandchildren. This year the scholarship committee will provide a $500.00 scholarship to Jordan Marsh who plans on attending the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point to study Conservation. LETTERS FROM THE DNR................................12/15/05Technician Kent Bass has finished looking at the walleye fingerlings. It does not appear the marked walleye wagon fry contributed to the great year class we had this year. Because so many of the fry escaped before marking we can't say there was no survival but it could not have been enough to be of biological significance. Last year the fry weren't marked but the fall YOY count was very low. No improvement over what the counts have been the past twelve years without a walleye wagon. In other words, no indication that the walleye wagon has been of any benefit on Long Lake to this point. We still have one trial year to go and DNR will mark the fry again this spring. 1/04/06I wasn't sure if bass were eating too many walleye fingerlings or just eating the food the walleye needed to thrive. The article found both to be the case but that largemouth were far more efficient at feeding on walleye than I would have thought. Apparently young walleye are relatively easy for largemouth to catch. That may explain why fall fingerling counts kept declining over the last twelve years even while more and more fry and fingerlings were stocked. Once bass populations reach a certain level they potentially can eat all the walleye fingerlings. If you stock more, the bass will just focus on the easy to catch fingerlings over other harder to catch prey until they are pretty much gone. This study also found that muskie and walleye populations interacted in a positive way. Good walleye populations and good muskie populations go together. If taking off the bass size limit works, we will likely see both walleye and muskie populations in Big McKenzie make a comeback. As for the Long Lake Chambers request for muskie, the Department is not going to stock them in Long Lake for now but its not off the table. It may be reconsidered in a few years after we see how the bass size limit thing goes. Muskie survival and growth would likely be a lot better after largemouth population is reduced and walleye population goes up. Walleye Stocking Program Rich Alvin The Long Lake Chamber Walleye Committee has had a busy year. Thanks to everyone who is a Chamber member, donator, or has bought a Chamber raffle ticket or participated in the ice-fishing contest. We use a lot of this money on our walleye project. We planted 5000 three to thirteen inch walleye fingerlings into Long Lake last November. Last spring, the Chamber, Walleyes for Tomorrow, and the DNR entered into a cooperative agreement to run a walleye wagon (fish hatchery) on Long Lake. The DNR supplied the nets, personnel and boats to put the nets in and gather the fish to be spawned. Bob Ostenson (retired DNR fisheries biologist) to spawn the fish and fertilize the eggs. The eggs where then placed in jars in the hatchery until they hatched. After hatching, they were placed in portable hatchers and taken out into the lake and released. We released approximately 2,825,000 fry. Estimates are that 1% will survive to four years old. We feel this was a very successful project. Boom shocking results were poor. On March 31st, we held a meeting to get ready for the upcoming walleye spawning season. Larry Dammon, DNR fisheries biologist and DNR warden Brian Knepper met with us to go over the 2005 walleye wagon compact. All permits and paperwork have been signed and approved. The DNR will not be providing any personnel or nets. We can use the Walleye For Tomorrow nets and we have boats lined up to lift the nets. Life jackets have been purchased for the netters. We may use our pontoon as a base for spawning out the fish. Mr. Ostenson has been hired to help with spawning. We will be cleaning and sanitizing the hatchery as soon as the lake opens. We will monitor water temps and then put in the nets and begin spawning out the fish and placing the eggs in the hatchery. Help is needed, particularly monitoring the hatchery 24 hours a day. If you are interested in helping call Rich Alvin at 354-3112. We would also like to thank everyone who drops off their aluminum cans at the Long Lake Town Hall. We collect approximately $800 a year from this project. As any local resident or tourist could see our informational signs at certain intersections looked hideous! For many years the Chamber has been granted permission to keep these posts up and maintain them. Unfortunately it has gotten away from us and private parties have been posting their own signs. The signs are worn and torn, people have moved or passed away so in the last year we have begun this restoration project. They were in desperate need of uniformity. If you had a sign up that you would like back, please contact Butch at Props: 354-3515 OR if you would like a new sign added to this fresh new line, you must be a social member ($15) of the chamber and the sign will cost $40. Top Prize were $1000 cash, 2nd was $500, 3rd was $250 and 4th was the Mystery Prize! ($100 ticket for our Spring Raffle) The contest was held in front of The Pioneer on Long Lake. If you have any questions please feel free to callus at (715)635-3260.Treats Reopens Mary Kupper There is a little quote that seems appropriate for this Spring at Treats: "We have four seasons in our part of the country --Winter, Still Winter, Almost Winter and Road Construction!!" But regardless of the road conditions, Treats willbe open everyday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and all kinds of tasty options in between. After listening to your suggestions, again this year we are adding some new menu choices for all three meals. Plus we will be having more choices for thosejust wishing to stop in for a "treat" such as pie or coffeecake and coffee, more appetizer/snacks, or a "cold treat". There are some tasty new ice creams this season. Especially for the kids (big and little). Blue Bunny has now joined with Disney in the naming of some of their ice creams. We'll be having ice creams with names like "Monsters Bubble Gum", "Buzz Lightyear Sherbet", "Mickey's Color Magic," and "Princess Cotton Candy". The new Jungle Adventureflavor for this season is "Elephant Stampede". And of course we'll have our own Wisconsin-made Cedar Crest flavors. We can't wait to see all our old friends again and to meet new friends. "Make new friends but keep the old - one is silver and the other's gold" seems to bea good slogan to live by - and we've always been partial to precious metals and friends!!Walleye Stocking Program Rich Alvin The Long Lake Chamber purchased 5,000 walleye fingerlings from John Guertner in Nov., 2003. They ranged in size from 3" to 15". We raised funds to purchase walleye fingerlings with proceeds from the Long Lake ice fishing contest, the Chamber pontoon raffle, recycling aluminum cans and from donations from lake residents collected by the Chamber and the LLPA. We wish to thank everyone for their generous support.All during 2003 and 2004 the Chamber, LLPA, and Walleyes for Tomorrow with the DNR have been working out a Cooperative Agreement for a fish rearing station. Such an agreement was needed to coordinate our activities with the fisheries department of the DNR. Rich Alvin(Chamber) and Wes Mohns (LLPA) are co-chairmen with Jim Kleven crewchief. Roger Nelson, of F &G Products donated a walleye wagon for the group to use. The DNR provided a task schedule and spawning equipment list. We contracted Bob Ostenson (retired DNR fisheries) to spawn the fish and teach us how to. The DNR also provided personnel, boats, and fyke nets . The DNR personnel netted the fish and Mr. Ostenson spawned them. The fertilized eggs were brought back to Dave's Outboard, placed in jars, and put into the hatcher.April 18th walleye wagon delivered to Dave's Outboard.April 19th DNR puts nets into Long Lake.April 20 DNR pulls nets, spawn fish; 1 jar in hatcher.April 21 Collect 1 plus jar .April 22 Collect 2 jarsApril 23 Collect 2 jarsApril 24 collect 5 jars.April 25 collect 2 jars. Dump 1 jar because it has clumped together. Resort and put eggs into portable floating hatcher. Hatcher is full. Hatcher is monitored every four hours until fry hatch in approximately two weeks.The advantages of using a portable hatcher: There is limited natural reproduction in most lakes. Genetics come from the lake that the fry will be released into. The open circulation of lake water in the hatcher ensures that the eggs/fry will develop at the same rate as if they had been spanned in the lake. This will time the hatch of the fry to the appearance of plankton in the lake. There is a much smaller cost of production due to volunteer help and no facilities charges. As you can see this is an ongoing project to bring the adult walleye population up. These fry need 4 years to become a legal adult of 15". It is estimated that hatching 3 million fry will produce 15,000 mature walleyes. With our full hatcher, we estimate we have approximately 4 million eggs in the jars.Cont from Page 4Thoughts for 2005.1. Contract for or purchase a walleye wagon. Larger unit?2.
